Breaking Dawn Part 1
The excitement built up as 10:30pm arrived, myself and four friends met up to watch the premiere of the Twilight’s Saga, Breaking Dawn part 1. We decided to meet at one of our houses and then go through together to watch the movie. We left early and got to the cinema for 11pm. Just in time for the gifts to be handed out. Posters of Edward and Bella and separate ones of Jacob, breaking Dawn pins and gift vouchers. Not to mention the free bangle you got from buying the “combo” popcorn and coke of the night.
Twihards had come from far and near to witness the wedding of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, and they did not travelled in vain.
The movie starts with, of course- the wedding. Which then was followed by the honeymoon, Bella being pregnant and so on.. We all know how the story goes and if you haven’t read the book then don’t worry because the media surely hasn’t kept any of it a secret anyway.
As a fan of the books foremost I must say that I enjoyed this movie better than the others. The script seemed to flow better; it was also kept quite close to the book. The scenes were more believable, such as the intimate scenes of Bella and Edward. In the previous movies their time together always seemed tormented by something unsaid. They were never relaxed and casual with each other (un like herself and Jacob). In this movie you see that. Starting at the wedding, honeymoon and then when Edward gets over Bella’s stubbornness of keeping the baby, we see it again, laughing and cuddling away like new married couples should be.
The wedding itself was bliss. And I’m sure brides to be will be changing a lot of their plans to have a similar one, including their dresses. I’m happy about the use of Iron and wines Flightless bird, American mouth song at the ceremony. I honestly thought that it would be played for their first dance but maybe an exact repeat wouldn’t have gone down well. Which reminds me, I didn’t see their first dance? Did I miss it? Or was it not in there at all? Pity.
A lot of emphasis was put on the details of the movie, such as the dress and the house at Isle Esme. That can go either way with fans. You can get it right or you can get it terribly wrong and believe you me, twilight fans will know when you get it wrong! Ok, I can’t speak for all fans but I liked what Bill portrayed. It wasn’t exactly the image I had in my head when I was reading the book but it didn’t matter, it was pretty.
The birth was exactly what I wanted. Gruesome and real. I felt her pain; I felt the frantic concern of getting the baby out. As I saw Bella’s beaten, sunken and lifeless body on the hospital mattress I felt shock and sadness, and I felt Edwards pain of losing the reason of his existence. And although I knew exactly what was going to happen next (that her heart would start beating again) I couldn’t help feeling the sense of loss, like, this was it, she was gone.
There were a couple of “little bits” that I would have liked to see in the movie. Bella’s “before” car, more of a tense atmosphere with Jacob frequently visiting the Vampire house, the part where Rosalie bends a mixing bowl into a dog bowl for Jacob to eat from etc.. But I guess 2 hours just isn’t long enough to cram everything in. They got all the important parts which counts.
I applaud the director, Bill Condon, for using the camera angles like he did. The screen shots and graphics of Bella’s turning. The memories that played back in her mind were a nice reflective time for the audience to remember her and Edwards beginning, the famous clips from the previous movies and stolen moments that they shared. It was a little “recap” of where she had come from to where she is now. Just about to finally have what she always wanted, to finally become-in my eyes- a woman, confident, strong and most importantly, immortal.
There is so much to say and comment about in this movie, and I’m sure many will, but I will have to end here by saying that this movie caught me from the very beginning to the very end. It tugged at my heart strings in many ways and wet my appetite for a little violence as well. And seeing that I had been dreaming and waiting in anticipation for more than a year now, it definitely was worth it and I will watch it again and again just to get my fill.
